Ways to Celebrate National Car Care Month

Ways to Celebrate National Car Care Month

The Car Care Council designates two months of the year for car care awareness: April (National Car Care) and October (Fall Car Care). By educating Americans about proper auto maintenance, these campaigns intend to increase vehicle safety. As an auto insurance agency, Nickerson is passionate about lowering your risks on the road. Here are some things you can do this month to celebrate National Car Care and improve your vehicle’s performance:

Check Your Tires

The first thing you should do is inspect your tire pressure. If you have a newer car, check your dash to see if the tire pressure light is on. If it is, the pressure is too low. Low pressure will put more wear and tear on the tires and also decrease your gas mileage. If you have an older vehicle, you’ll need to check the pressure manually with a tire pressure gauge.

Another thing you should inspect is the tread. If your tires are balding, they’ll lose traction. Perform the penny test to see if the tread is too thin. Place a penny in the tire’s groove with Lincoln’s head facing down. If his head doesn’t disappear into the groove, it’s time to replace the tire!

Replace Your Windshield Wipers

Winter weather can do a number on your windshield wipers. Cold, dry air and ice will eventually degrade the rubber. If the wipers are warped and pitted, they won’t effectively clear your windshield, leaving you with poor visibility. This could be a serious problem if you get stuck in a rainstorm or find your car covered in dirt or mud. While you’re replacing your wipers, it may be a good idea to top off your wiper fluid, as well.

Change Your Oil

Oil lubricates engine parts and keeps them from producing too much friction. When the engine oil gets old, it becomes dirty, sludgy, and less-productive. If you don’t change your oil regularly, you’ll put excessive wear and tear on your vehicle and ultimately decrease its lifespan. No one wants to unexpectedly break down in the middle of the road. You can maintain your engine simply by changing your oil according to manufacturer instructions.

Schedule Auto Maintenance

There are some things you should leave to the experts. During National Car Care Month, schedule an inspection with a trusted auto mechanic shop or dealership. A mechanic will inspect your brakes, tires, engine, transmission, and electrical components to make sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape. In addition to necessary repairs, they may also rotate or realign your tires, change your oil and air filter, or add coolant.

Schedule a Car Insurance Review

Your auto insurance policy is another important part of car maintenance. If anything unexpected happens to your vehicle, whether it be from an accident or natural disaster, a good auto insurance plan will help cover repair/replacement costs. As your life and needs change, your car insurance plan will also need to be adjusted. During National Car Care Month, take some time to schedule a car insurance review. Your agent will audit your auto insurance plan to make sure you’re getting the right coverage at the best rate.
