Preparing for a Natural Disaster

What Would You Do If a Natural Disaster Struck?

It is important to be prepared for any emergency situation, but you might not always think of the right things in advance. There are certain types of insurance that come to mind easily, and others that you might not have thought of. You have health insurance, of course, because you want to be prepared if you become ill or injured. You have car insurance, because it’s required. You have homeowners insurance because it’s part of your mortgage. But have you ever taken a detailed look at those insurances to make sure you really have what you need? What if a natural disaster strikes? Are you ready?

Natural Disasters Aren’t Always Covered

When you look at your insurance, you’ll see that certain things are covered by the policy. If your house catches on fire, for example, you will likely be able to get the coverage you need to rebuild. But what about an earthquake? A flood? Those types of disasters aren’t usually covered in general policies and if you feel you are at risk, you will want to get additional coverage.

Obtaining Earthquake Insurance

If you live in an area that is at a high risk for earthquakes, getting earthquake insurance is very valuable. There are different options so you can find something you can afford, but it’s important to do so before an earthquake occurs. It’s the difference between paying a deductible to get repairs done and paying for the repairs in full yourself. You may not have the money for such repairs when they arise and you can’t predict when that will happen.

Purchasing Flood Insurance

Floor damage is an unexpected hazard that also is not generally covered. If you live in a flood plain, you definitely want to have flood insurance to protect yourself. While flooding is just water, water is a huge danger and hazard. It can create mold, damage structures, and take out a whole house, if it tries hard enough. Flood insurance, like earthquake insurance, allows you to pay a deductible for repairs instead of having to pay for all of the repairs.

Comparing Costs

Take a look at what your home costs. What if it were to be completely destroyed in an earthquake or flood? Then look at what the costs are of these types of insurance. You will often see that it is worth the cost. It not only keeps you covered if anything ever happens to your home in one of these disasters, but it also gives you peace of mind that if a disaster strikes, you have what you need to get the repairs done.

Finding Natural Disaster Insurance

Not everyone needs every type of natural disaster insurance. Can an earthquake happen anywhere? Sure, but it’s more likely to damage homes in high-risk areas along fault lines. Can floods occur anywhere? Of course, but it’s not as likely for a home on a tall hill far away from any bodies of water. If you feel you are at risk, talk to an insurance agent at Nickerson Insurance Services, Inc and figure out what you can afford and what you are willing to risk to keep your home safe in the future.
